Alternative Vehicles

A new delivery model

In 2010, we began to introduce a new way to deliver the mail in many parts of the country. Under the new model, letter carriers will deliver regular mail items, as well as performing many of the tasks, such as delivering parcels and picking up mail from street letter boxes, that were done by other delivery personnel under the old delivery model. Greening our fleet

We’ve been testing alternative vehicles for many years to advance technology and secure vehicles that are more fuel-efficient and environmentally friendly.

  • Since 1975, Canada Post vehicles have travelled more than 189 million km on alternate fuels and platforms.
  • In 1998, we began working with Azure Dynamics to develop technology that would reduce CO2 emissions and improve fuel efficiency for our fleet.

New all-electric delivery vehicles

In December 2010, Canada Post received the first Transit Connect electric commercial delivery vehicle in Canada. A further 9 of these vehicles will start being used to deliver mail in 2011.

Transit Connect features

  • Reduces gasoline fuel costs to zero.
  • Zero tailpipe emissions.
  • Virtually silent.
  • Battery electric powertrain by Azure Dynamics.
