(Letter sent to the editor of the Cornwall Standard-Freeholder)
Dear Editor:
The August 18th article, "Library taking hard look at free services", mentions the proposed elimination of the book rate by Canada Post.
Canada Post has stated clearly and publicly that we will not raise the library book rate unilaterally. Canada Post intends to honour its long-time commitment toward the Canadian Libraries and nothing will be done without the agreement of the government, its shareholder. Rather, we will work with the various parties involved to find a solution that doesn't create hardship for Canadian libraries.
The Minister Responsible for Canada Post has also made it clear that he supports the library book rate program and has assured the Canadian public that this subsidy will continue.
I hope this clarifies the situation.
Sincerely,
John Caines
