Newsroom - Letters to the Editor

July 8, 2004

(Letter sent to Woodstock Sentinel-Review)

Dear Editor:

I would like to clarify the issue you raised in your July 7th editorial, "Increase? What increase?"

The suggestion that Canada Post "pulled a fast one" by announcing a January one-cent increase on the same day as the election is very misleading. When the Consumer Price Index triggers an automatic domestic rate increase, Canada Post is obligated to give six months advance notice in the Canada Gazette Part 1.

Gazetting takes place on the last Saturday in June and we had scheduled the announcement for after the election so it would not get lost in the election coverage. However a Canadian Press reporter informed us he was filing a story on election day based on the information in the Canada Gazette. In order to be fair to all the news media, we issued a news release on June 28th so everyone would have the information at the same time.

By the way, the last time we put 10-cent stamps on letters was 1976.

Sincerely,

John Caines
